Having a deep understanding of the data that will be available in production environments is absolutely crucial for developing a robust CDS solution.
Creating MockData that is representative of production data may not always be the most "exciting" task, but it certainly is one of the most important in the entire process of building CDS solutions. Just as when designing any high quality production grade software, significant time and effort should be allocated to data modelling, validation, and testing. Creating MockData is a vital part of this process.
